Revolutionizing Grocery Supply Chains with

UX Strategy Case Study

Weston Jacey

Background

As a UX Strategist at a large grocery tech organization, my focus was on improving the experiences of a diverse range of associates, spanning farmers, grocery store employees, delivery truck drivers, distribution center workers, and financial analysts.

My primary responsibility involved empathizing with these associates to truly understand their challenges. I was tasked to work with a dedicated team of developers focused on demand systems for Financial Analysts (The User) tasked with forecasting the demand of *perishable grocery goods.

*Perishable goods meaning goods that expire in 3-5 days

The Problem

The challenge emerged when leadership noticed our existing demand systems were initially designed for Analysts dealing with non-perishable goods (non- perishable goods have a long shelf life).

When applied to our unique user group purchasing products with a short shelf life (3-5 days), the systems weren't optimized for them to do the job well.

The forecasting systems proved inefficient for this specific user, leading to a disconnect between their actual needs and the assumptions made by our developers enhancing the features on these systems.

Now that we were able to define the problem, I still needed to gauge what questions our developers had about our User Group.

Workshop Facilitation

To address this gap, I initiated a workshop to align our development team's understanding with the unique requirements of our specific user group.

Developers generated questions related to predefined epics and spikes, which were then organized through affinity mapping.

This process helped distill themes, leading to the formulation of targeted questions correlating to 2 epics and 5 spikes. The act of converging these questions formed the basis for an interview guide. The next step was to conduct the User Interviews.

User Interviews

Armed with the interview guide, I conducted multiple interviews with our specific user group. These interviews aimed to uncover insights into their pain points and challenges, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of their needs in the context of demand forecasting for perishable goods.

On top of this, I asked very technical questions derived from the workshop I previously conducted with our development team.

Synthesis & Delivery

The synthesis of interview findings were presented to both the leadership team and the developer squad. The insights gained from the interviews addressed the questions raised during the workshop, providing clarity on the user's perspective.

Armed with this information, we successfully tackled the feature enhancements for the demand systems. The final deliverables included a dedicated persona outlining the user's pain points and in-depth insights into the epics and spikes we had defined previously.

Through this strategic application of design thinking principles, we not only bridged the gap between user needs and developer assumptions but also paved the way for more effective and user-centric demand systems within the grocery supply chain.
